Tag play situations

Tag play situations require the defender to beat the runner with the ball and apply a real tag. These plays show when the defense needs the tag, where the receiver should set up, and how backup players protect the next throw.

When to use it

When to teach this family

  • Use these plays when there is no force at the target base or when a runner tags up after a caught fly ball.
  • Teach them before practicing steals, tag-ups, and throws to third or home.
  • Review them when defenders stand on the bag waiting for a force that does not exist.

Common mistakes

What to watch

  • Receiving the ball behind the bag instead of where the tag can meet the runner.
  • Assuming a foot on the base is enough when the play requires a tag.
  • Backup players freezing because the first throw looks close.
  • Cutoff players redirecting the ball away from the actual lead-runner threat.
