Rundowns
Rundowns work when the defense stays calm and makes the runner choose. The ball should move with short, firm throws while the next defender closes ground and the back base stays protected.
When to use it
When to teach this family
- Use these plays any time a runner is caught between two bases.
- Teach them after pickoffs, over-aggressive turns, or first-and-third plays that can create a chase.
- Review them when players throw too early, run beside the runner, or leave one end of the rundown empty.
Common mistakes
What to watch
- Throwing from too far away instead of closing distance first.
- Chasing the runner back and forth without forcing a decision.
- Both end defenders moving toward the same side and opening the safe base.
- Applying the tag too late after the runner has already reached the bag.
